ADMINISTERS AND ENFORCES: Provisions of all laws, codes, and ordinances pertaining to the location, design, materials, construction, alteration, repair, equipment, maintenance, use, occupancy, removal, and demolition of structures located within the Town of Niskayuna

Building and Zoning Permits: are required for many building projects, including new construction, shed, additions, structural changes, decks, finished basements, pools,  fencing, demolition, roofing, siding, and window replacement, emergency alarm installation. Contractors must have an insurance certificate in the Town of Niskayuna’s name, which shows general liability. New York State workers’ compensation and disability benefits insurance coverage, or approved waiver are also required. Homeowners may perform their own work with an affidavit of insurance exemption. Please call Steve Carbone of the NYS Worker's Compensation Board, Bureau of Compliance at (518) 486-6307 if you have questions.

Inspection Times and Procedures: To schedule a building inspection, call the Building Department. Inspections requested for the morning must be called in before 10 a.m. Inspections requested for the afternoon must be called in before 2 p.m. Inspections will not be made before 10 a.m., between 12:00 a.m. and 2 p.m., or after 4:00 p.m. unless by prior arrangement. Exact times for inspections cannot be guaranteed. The Building Department understands that not being able to schedule specific times is difficult for concrete crews and people who want to meet the inspector on the job. We will do the best we can to meet these time sensitive inspections.

These and/or other inspections as needed to insure code compliance are required based on the type of construction for which a permit is issued.

Plumbing Permits and Inspections: Plumbing work performed in the Town requires a separate plumbing permit. Plumbing permits are issued between 8:30am and 10:30am at the Niskayuna Water and Sewer Garage at 2555 River Road. For permits or to schedule inspections, call Bill Parkis at 377-8411

Electrical Inspections: Electrical work performed in the Town requires a separate electrical permit To schedule an electrical inspection, call any of the Town approved electrical inspectors.

Dig Safely NY: It is required that before digging, call Dig Safely New York excavation notification center at 1-800-962-7962 to locate utilities. All utilities (gas, electric, phone, cable TV, etc) will be located free of charge.

Complaints: Are investigated by the Building Department. Notices of violation and court appearance tickets are issued when necessary.
