The 9th Annual Canal Clean Sweep is Coming
The 9th Annual Canal Clean Sweep is coming Friday-Sunday, April 25-27, and we need your help! The NYS Canal Corporation, in partnership with Parks & Trails New York, is once again planning Canal Clean Sweep in recognition of Earth Day 2014 and in advance of the 190th consecutive navigation season on the New York State Canal System.  As in previous years, the NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation is also sponsoring the event.

Last year not-for-profit organizations, civic groups, businesses, and social clubs took part in nearly 100 cleanup and beautication events along the Canal System and the Canalway Trail.

We are seeking your assistance in making the 9th Annual Canal Clean Sweep an even bigger success by asking you or your group to organize a cleanup activity.  Whether it’s picking up litter and brush on Lock 7 grounds, or preparing a section of the Canalway Trail for the thousands of visitors that arrive each year; your efforts to work hand-in-hand with neighbors and Canal Corporation employees will enhance and preserve this tremendous environmental, cultural and historic resource.

To recognize your group’s participation, the Canal Corporation and its partners will promote your cleanup and beautification event with statewide press releases and will provide you with a template to tailor to local media. Parks & Trails New York will also provide up-to-date event information and maintain a comprehensive listing of events taking place throughout the weekend on its website at

Organizing groups will also receive free Canal Clean Sweep T-shirts and the Canal Corporation will provide trash bags and arrange for the disposal of collected and bagged trash. Each group will be expected to provide their own tools (if needed) and work gloves.

Please complete the registration form which is available at Niskayuna Town Hall, and send it to Drew Pollak-Bruce at Parks & Trails New York, 29 Elk St, Albany, NY 12207 or fax to 518-427-0067 no later than March 15, 2014, or you can register online at

If you have any questions or would like further information on coordinating a cleanup and beautification event, please contact Drew at or (518) 434-1583 X209.
