NYSDOT SCHEDULES NEW MEETING ON REXFORD BRIDGE PROJECT

The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting next month to discuss changes to a proposed project to make improvements to the Route 146 corridor that connects Rexford (Town of Clifton Park), Saratoga County, and the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County.

The Department is proposing to replace the Rexford Bridge and make improvements to the nearby Route 146 intersections with Aqueduct Road and Williams Street in Niskayuna, and with Riverview Road in Clifton Park.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rexford Fire Station at 1601 Route 146 in Rexford. The meeting is open to the public and will provide an opportunity to hear more about the proposed project.

In response to public comments from two meetings held by the Department in January, NYSDOT has developed a plan that would provide four through-travel lanes on a proposed new Rexford Bridge and Route 146 between Aqueduct Road and Riverview Road. The new plan represents an evolution from the previously discussed preferred three-lane bridge alternative. (The three-lane bridge plan will be retained as a feasible alternative during the public comment period.)

Once comments on the new plan are received, one alternative will be chosen. Both the four-lane and three-lane plans include building a roundabout to replace the traffic signal at the intersection of Route 146 and Aqueduct Road. Both plans also include improving the intersection of Route 146 and Riverview Road in Rexford and adding a multi-use trail on Route 146 and the bridge that would connect Riverview Road with the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail.

Based on public comments, changes included in the new four-lane bridge plan include:

  • Extending the proposed northbound two-lane section of Route 146 an additional 250 feet to the north.
  • Eliminating a proposed closure of the northern intersection of Main Street and Route 146 in Rexford.
  • Updating the proposed roundabout design at the intersection of Route 146 and Aqueduct Road.
The Rexford Bridge was opened in 1965 and carries more than 22,000 motor vehicles per day.

At this point, there is no timetable for construction.

Comments about the project can be made in writing to the project manager, Richard Filkins, at the NYS Department of Transportation, Region 1 Design, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, N.Y. 12232. Comments may also be submitted via email to: richard.filkins@dot.ny.gov.
