The Office of the Chief of Police has authorized the release of the following information:
At about 8:00am this morning, (June 17, 2014) the dispatch center at the Niskayuna Police Department turned public safety dispatching operations over to the authority of the Schenectady County Unified Communications Center. (UCC). The town’s dispatchers, now county employees, will join dispatchers from the Town of Glenville and the City of Schenectady who are already dispatching for police and fire at the UCC.
911 Emergencies as well as non-emergency requests for service in Niskayuna will now be dispatched from the UCC. Investigative and administrative functions will remain at the Niskayuna Police Department within the Niskayuna Town Hall.
Due to this move, there will be certain changes to day to day operations within the police department. The most noticeable to the general public will be the absence of a dispatcher at the police department entrance to greet walk-in complaints. Within the police department entrance, two phones have now been installed for the public’s calls for service. A 911 direct line phone as well as a non-emergency phone has been installed for contacting the appropriate personnel. For non-emergency calls for service, a phone menu has been put in place to help guide the caller.
For residents calling from their homes or businesses, the non-emergency number for the Niskayuna Police Department has not changed. (518) 374-3159 will still be utilized and will bring the caller directly to the police department phone menu.
The department will also be working on updating the town’s police department web site so the public can access certain services via the internet.
